Take advantage of 2009 energy price cuts on electricity and gas

2009 was a better a year for household fuel bills. The six major fuel companies cut their prices by 3.7%, wiping out 13% of 2008's price increases. Uswitch report, however, that the situation will change again in 2010. But its still not too late to take advantage of recent price cuts and get the best deal – particularly on green electricity and gas.

The message coming through loud and clear is that householders cannot rely on fuel company price cuts to bring their energy bills down. Those who don't take regular action to ensure they are on the cheapest tariff will often see their bills increase.

According to Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, some householders are paying up to £350 too much for their energy at present. Her advice is to move to dual fuel, pay by direct debit and sign up to an online plan. This arrangement will make it easier to monitor price changes and to switch supplier when you're not getting the the best deal. It also saves paper as you don’t receive endless bills through the post.
